First, we will need some information before you start this process. On the PC, click on start, then select “Run”. You will be given a prompt, where you will type in “cmd” in the available space and click “OK”. Once you have done that a window will display, this window is what is know as the command prompt. Type “ipconfig” within this window and press enter (or return).

You will be given the Windows IP Configuration, which usually consists of four listed items. In this case make sure you write down the set of numbers (and dots) next to “IP Address” and “Default Gateway”.

For example, IP Address will be listed as 192.168.1.105 , while Default Gateway will be listed as 192.168.1.1. These are just examples to give you an idea of what you should look for and what I will be using throughout the rest of the process. Please note that these numbers will vary on your system and you should write them down for future reference. Once you have that information, you can proceed to configure the router.

Open your internet browser (such as internet explorer) and within the address bar (where you would type in a website address), type in the set of numbers and dots you wrote down for the default gateway. In my example, I will open the browser and type “192.168.1.1” in the address bar. Press enter (or click go) and you will be given a login prompt. In most cases, the default username is “Administrator” and the password is “Password”. If this is not the case, you will have to contact the manufacturer of the router (such as Linksys) or the ISP (such as Verizon DSL).

Once you have logged in, you will be given various options in regards to configuring the router. The interface will vary between manufacturers, but usually the first page will display the IP address assigned to the router, the DNS server address and the 2nd DNS server address (usually starts with “255.255.”). You should already have the IP address written down, as it’s the same as the default gateway (the numbers you enter to access that page). Make sure you write down the DNS server address and the 2nd DNS server address, you will use these for future reference.

As I mentioned before, the interface (or layout) of the configuration page will vary between manufacturers. This means to find the option on where to setup port forwarding will have a different location. For my example, I will be using a Linksys router to configure the port forwarding process. On the Linksys interface, their will be a link in the upper menu labeled “Applications and Gaming”, this is where you can setup the port forwarding (on a Linksys router).

On the “Applications and Gaming” display, you will notice rows of textboxes, followed by an IP address (with the last set of numbers missing) and a checkbox. Here is where we will setup the port forwarding on the router.

On the first row, type in “HTTP”, then for the following two boxes type in “80” (in a sense your saying “80 to 80”). Now on the last textbox, you will notice that its part of an IP address, meaning you will be entering a number in that box. Here is where you need the IP address you wrote down previously from the very beginning (from the command prompt). Type in the last set of numbers that come from the IP address you wrote down. For example, my IP address listed was “192.168.1.105”, so that means I will type “105” in the last textbox. Now check the checkbox under “Enable”.

To briefly go over what you have done, the first box is where you will type in description or purpose for the port. The next two boxes (in the case of the Linksys) are where you would place the range of ports to be open for that purpose.

In the example “HTTP” is the purpose of web access, and the port range was 80 to 80 (meaning only port “80” is “open”) for IP address 192.168.1.105.

Now you will repeat the steps again with this information. Please note each line must take its own row.

Make sure each row is enabled. Once you have done that, you have successfully completed the port forwarding process for that PC-based DVR and router.
