For the following steps, I will use the Vivotek IP2111 IP camera and their latest version software to date.

First you need to have an Ethernet cable that will connect the IP camera to a router, switch or hub that resides on your network. In some cases, you might have to use the com (serial) connection to directly connect to a modem. After you have done that, you will need to power up the camera with the supplied AC adapter. Once that is completed you should have a red light on to indicate power and a green light blinking to indicate activity.

After connecting the camera, you will need to run the installation wizard on the computer you wish to use to view the IP camera. The installation wizard will allow you to detect the IP camera on your network through its assigned IP address and its unique serial number (or MAC address). Also with this installation wizard, you have a choice of permanently assigning an IP address to the camera. To verify the installation, you will open up internet explorer and type in the IP address in the address bar. For example, the IP address assigned to my camera was 192.168.1.108, so I typed http://192.168.1.108 in the address bar. Once you do that you will be given a login prompt where the default username is “root” and the password is the IP camera’s MAC address (or serial number) which is case sensitive.

After you have logged in you will see the streaming video from the IP camera. You will also notice you have to the choice of changing the quality and video window size. I should note that the best quality is seen when set to “Excellent”, however the window size should be “standard” to assure minimal to no delay. If the window size is set to “double” (while quality is ‘Excellent’) you will notice a delay or lag between frames.
