To put things into perspective, DVR is the equivalent to DVDs as NVR is to HD-DVD/Blue-Ray. DVR is the most commonly used method of recording videos today but NVR is looking to take over its place in the future. Currently, a complete DVR system consists of CCTVs, monitor station(s), and the digital recorders (computer or standalone unit). Often, the CCTVs are hardwired to the DVRs thus limited to distance. Although it is possible to extend the distance but cost will increase as well. NVR system on the other hand is similar in design but the technology is different. Using IP cameras, it is possible to transmit video from halfway across the globe. IP cameras either be hardwired or wirelessly connected to the NVR system. Also NVR system can support a far greater amount of cameras than DVR systems. As the technology improve, NVRs will eventually replace DVRs in the digital surveillance world.
