Here are a series of questions you should ask yourself when your setting up a POS system when sending data to a printer. These questions will assure you have a proper POS system configuration (when sending data to a printer).

What Baud rate and connection am I using?
On the GV-DATA CAPTURE module there are two dipswitches.

The dipswitch labeled SW1 must be set according to the baud rate you’re using. In most cases, switch 1 and 2 are set to the “ON” position, while 3 and 4 are set to the “OFF” position.

The dipswitch labeled SW2 must be set according to the type of connection your using (serial or parallel). In most case, you will be using serial, therefore the switches 1-4 are in the “ON” position, while 5-8 are in the “OFF” position.

What serial connection am I using?
Make sure your using a PC-based serial connection.

What type of printer am I using?
Make sure your using a text-based (TXT) printer and not a graphic based printer.

What existing connection is between the POS & printer?
Make sure you using a 9-pin serial connection.

Do you know the pin definitions?
Here are GSS are pin definitions are as followed:
Pin 2 –Tx (Transfer)
Pin 3 – Rx (Receive)
Pin 5 – GND (Ground)

Does the printer print without the module?
Make sure the printer is functional and working with a direct connection to the POS system. If its not working, you have a problem with the printer or the POS system. For some users, the custom commands within the POS system are incorrect.

Does the printer print with the module in-between the printer and POS system?
Make sure the printer is functional thru this connection. If its not, you have a problem with the connection (i.e. cable issue).

Once that has been resolved, use the supplied serial cable to connect the module to the GV-system COMM port.

Have you configured the software properly?
With the GV application select....

Configure -> POS Application Setting -> Device Setup -> New

Here are the default settings....

Printer Type: Serial
Device: POS 1
Module: General
COM port: 1

Click okay and test to see if the printer prints. Once that is done, you can click on "Text Setup" to choose where you want the camera name stamped on the video.

**** WHEN YOU WANT TO HAVE THE POS SYSTEM PRINT DATA ONTO A VIDEO DISPLAY ****

In some cases, you might not want the data to print out to a printer, instead you want it to print to a video display and recorded with the GV-system.

When your doing such a setup here are some initial steps you should take to configure and test the POS system.

* First test your connections
Start with the direct connection from the POS system to the GV system with the supplied serial cable. Using the HyperTerminal program included on the Windows OS, you will test to see if the POS system is sending out data to the GV-system. If your not recently any data to the HyperTerminal application, you have an issue with your connection. This can be related to the cables your using, or most importantly the POS system is not sending data from the COM port. For the cable issue, make sure your using a PC-based serial cable and you have the proper pin definitions.

2 <-> 3
3 <-> 2
5 <-> 5

Once that has been resolved, run the GeoVision software, and try a test on the POS system. If working properly, you should see text appear on the video display. If you do not see any text on the display, make sure you have set a POS device and its recieves data from the available COM port.

You will notice in this case a GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module is not required, but in some case you can still use it between the POS and GV-system. Using the module will allow the usage of a printer and can convert a hardware handshake to a software handshake.
