The concept of the POS system is to caputre and record data during a POS (point of sales) transaction. When a transaction is made, the data is sent to a GV-DATA CAPTURE or GV-NET module that sends this data to the GV-system for recording and monitoring. This information is then sent to a printer for a physical documentation of the transaction (i.e. receipt).

POS system connection usually consists of these components:

- POS System (i.e. register)

- GeoVision GV-DATA CAPTURE or GV-NET

- GSS GV-System

- Printer

- GV-HUB (when more than one serial port is needed)

- GV-Net Card (when long distance usage is needed)

The POS system connections usually consist of serial cables (RS-232), where two are supplied with the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) and one from the POS system. One of the supplied RS-232 cables from GV will connect to the POS system, then connect to the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module. Then the other supplied RS-232 cable will connect from the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module to the GV-System. The cable supplied with the POS system will connect the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module to the printer.

This is for a single connection, however in most cases more than one POS system will need to be connected to the GV-System. This is where the use of a GV-HUB is required, where this unit will convert one USB port into four serial ports.

When you’re using a serial connection, it’s recommended that the physical distance between the POS system and GV-system should be no more than 50 ft.

If your connection needs to be greater than 50 ft. make sure to use the supplied RS-232 cable is connects the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module to the POS system and the supplied cable to connect the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module to the printer. Then proceed to use a RS-485 connection from the GV-DATA CAPTURE (or GV-NET) module to the GV-Net Card installed on the GV-system.

The RS-485 connections consist of two wires (blue and yellow) that are spliced into a two-pin green connectors (one to the module, the other to the net card).

Using the RS-485 connection allows a physical distance between the POS system and the GV-system to be as long as 1000 ft.

That is essentially the functions of a POS systems and how its connected.
