MOBOTIX cannot conclusively state which file system (under Linux) should be used for file server transfer since the file system to be used varies according to the distribution and the kernel version in each case.
MOBOTIX has very often used reiserfs and XFS – even for large partitions of several hundred gigabytes. No problems were encountered with the current kernel versions 2.6.x.

Based on reports by two customers (at the end of 2005 and the beginning of 2006) and its own tests (carried out in 2006), MOBOTIX strongly warns against using large partitions with the ext3 file system.

In the reported cases partitions ranging in size from 250 GB to 2.5 TB were used. Even when transferring a small number of cameras, errors occurred after short operating periods, with the effect that the file system could no longer be written during operation. Attempts to repair the file system could not be successfully implemented. The problems occurred even after reformatting the partitions.

A typical error message displayed in this case is as follows: EXT3-fs error (device dm-6) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted.
